No visit to Colorado would be complete without experiencing Pikes Peak, known simply as "America's Mountain." It is one of the smallest of the 54 - 14,000 foot peaks in the state, but undeniably the most famous. The peak got its name from Lieutenant Zebulon Pike, who first spotted the mountain in 1806, but failed to reach its summit - and doubted that anyone ever would. Ironically, the peak will always be a popular spot due to the summit highway which makes it much more accessible than Colorado's other giants. . Highway 24 was completed in 1915 and affords visitors the opportunity to enjoy Pikes Peak in a leisurely manner. During your drive to the summit, you'll encounter some of the most extraordinary scenery imaginable as you meander through the clouds and along side mountain reservoirs. The majestic view from the top is truly inspirational and will leave you breathless, whether you're staring out over the plains or into the heart of the Rockies.
Pikes Peak Cog Railway provides an excellent alternative to driving while still ascending to the top of the mountain. The world's highest Cog railway takes riders in comfort past cascading streams and dense pine forests and runs from late April to early November.
Perched on top of Pikes Peak, the Summit House offers visitors spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains and the city of Colorado Springs. You can enjoy lunch in the restaurant and pick up a couple souvenirs to remember the famous Peak.
Pikes Peak is also a wonderland for racecar enthusiasts. The annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb hosts top racecar drivers who challenge the Peak at speeds of over 100 miles per hour. The first Race to the Clouds was run in 1916, making it the second-oldest race in America, second only to the Indianapolis 500!
Machines and drivers roar around one of the finest tracks in the world at speeds exceeding 200 miles an hour at Pikes Peak International Raceway. The raceway can accommodate up to 40,000 cheering fans.
The entrance to Pikes Peak is located 15 minutes west of Colorado Springs on Highway 24. Plan on taking 2-3 hours for the round trip journey to the summit. There are plenty of places to pull of the road for a picnic or a quick photograph. For a free brochure listing all the Pikes Peak area attractions call 1-800-525-2250 or visit www.pikes-peak.com.
