Greektown is the liveliest place downtown, and visitors have spread its renown worldwide.

Greektown’s reputation was built on its many famous restaurants. Authentic Greek cuisine is what made Greektown famous. Restaurants such us Pegasus Taverna New Parthenon, Cyprus Taverna and the New Hellas Café framer Greek country cooking, and offer some of the most popular Greek dishes including: Spanakoteropeta (spinach-cheese pie), tender, succulent lamb chops, and Moussaka (layered eggplant and ground lamb with herbs and spices. Other restaurants feature specialties ranging from Ethiopian to Ten-Men, Cajun & Creole to Chicago-style deep dish pizza.




Anchored by three historic churches, and the site of Detroit’s early industry, Greektown has much to offer by way of tune traveling vistas. Second Baptist Church was founded in 1836 by former slaves, and was unimportant “station” on the Underground Railroad. Old St. Mary’s Catholic Church’s blend of Pisan Romanesque and Venetian Renaissance details combines to create one of Detroit’s most beautiful churches. The Annunciation Greek Orthodox
Cathedral has been at the center of the Greek community since it was founded in 1910.


Historic Trappers Alley, site of Detroit’s early fur industry, now is home to one of three temporary gaming facilities in Detroit. The Greektown Casino opened in the fall of 2000 and features all the excitement of a world-class gaming facility. Other notable adaptive reuse projects include the International Center Building; home to the World’s largest indoor waterfall (formerly the 190 century Ferry Seed Warehouse), and the Atheneum Suites Hotel, Detroit’s only AAA rated four-diamond hotel.


Greektown also offers unique shops, fine bakeries and nightclubs. Monroe Street is Greektown’s main street with attractions radiating outward from its intersection at Beaubien Street. And getting to Greektown is easy, by using the Lafayette exit from I-375. Greektown is also well connected to downtown attractions and hotels via the elevated light rail Detroit People Mover, and in just a few minutes walk to Detroit’s Theatre District, Harmonic Park and the new home of the Detroit Tigers, Comerica Park.
