According to the British Tourist Authority, drivers of the famous London black taxicabs must pass a rigorous test to prove their knowledge of London. Taxis can be hailed in the street if the yellow "For Hire" light is switched on. Taxis are far more expensive than traveling by bus or underground railway, although a cab ride can be an enjoyable experience with the right driver.
Over long distances, unlicensed minicabs (normal saloon cars) are usually cheaper than black cabs. Always ask the price when you book and confirm it with the driver. Minicabs cannot be hailed in the street: drivers touting for business (common at night) are acting illegally. Consult the Yellow Pages phone directory for a local firm.
