In 1908, Giulio Gatti-Casazza (director), Alfred Hertz, Gustav Mahler, and Arturo Toscanini (conductors) took over the artistic direction of the already 27-year-old Metropolitan Opera House, thus forming the Metropolitan Opera Company. In 1932 the Metropolitan Opera Association, Inc., was formed, and performances were thereafter underwritten by public subscription. It wasn't until 1940 that the association bought the opera house from the Metropolitan Opera and Real Estate Company, marking the final step in transference from private to public sponsorship. Since it opened in 1883, the Metropolitan Opera has been one of the world's leading opera companies. During the course of their 32-week season, the Met stages more than 200 performances. More than 800,000 people attend the performances in the opera house and millions more experience the Metropolitan Opera from home on television and radio. One popular program from the Met is the Saturday matinee performances that are broadcast over the Texaco radio network. Recently the Metropolitan introduced "Met Titles," individual computerized screens mounted in specially built railings at the back of each row of seats provide a translation of the opera (even those performed in English).
