Located on West 62nd through West 66th streets between Columbus and Amsterdam avenues, the Lincoln Center has been the center of New York's performance art scene since the 1950s. Its various venues and free outdoor concerts attract nearly five million people every year. From orchestras, to ballet, to movie screenings, the Lincoln Center features it all.

For starters, there's the Avery Fisher Hall, the oldest of the buildings in Lincoln Center Plaza. Here, visitors can experience the incomparable New York Philharmonic Orchestra from September through June. The acoustics are phenomenal and the performance is second to none.

The Lincoln Center also is home to the Metropolitan Opera House, where the Metropolitan Opera performs. This famous opera company is world-renowned and has played host to the biggest names in opera. The City Opera also calls Lincoln Center home. Though the company is not as famous as the Met, the City Opera garners rave reviews of its own.

If opera's not your bag, hop on over to the New York State Theater, the venue for ballet enthusiasts. The New York City Ballet is showcased during both winter and spring seasons. For thrifty artisans, don't miss the free outdoor concerts held semi-regularly at the Guggenheim Bandshell at Damrosch Park.

If you thrive on drama, you definitely don't want to overlook the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, a performing arts venue that has showcased plays from such noted scribes as Tennessee Williams. The theater is highly regarded among those "in the know." Down the adjacent staircase is the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, also a prominent drama venue that specializes in experimental theater.

The Alice Tully Hall, a haven for the Chamber Music Society (from October through May) and site of the New York Film Festival (September and October), and the Walter Reade Theater, a place to witness cutting edge feature films, round out the performance centers at this entertainment Mecca.
